Over 70% of Shopify traffic comes from mobile devices. Yet most stores are still designed desktop-first, leaving massive revenue on the table. Here are the mistakes killing your mobile sales.
1. Tiny Tap Targets
The problem: Buttons and links that are too small to tap accurately on mobile. Visitors get frustrated and leave.
Why it happens: Designs are created on desktop screens where everything looks fine. But on a 5-inch phone screen, that 30px button becomes nearly impossible to tap.
The fix: Minimum 44x44px tap targets. Add padding around links. Make your Add to Cart button full-width on mobile.
2. Slow Mobile Load Times
The problem: Mobile users are often on slower connections. A 5-second load time loses 90% of visitors.
Why it happens: Heavy images, too many Shopify apps, unoptimized themes, and third-party scripts.
The fix: Compress images (WebP format), remove unused apps, lazy-load below-the-fold content, and minimize JavaScript.
3. Desktop Navigation on Mobile
The problem: Mega menus and complex navigation that work on desktop become unusable on mobile.
Why it happens: Most themes use responsive CSS that just "shrinks" the desktop nav instead of redesigning it for mobile.
The fix: Simplify mobile navigation. Use a clean hamburger menu with clear categories. Add a search bar prominently.
4. Checkout Form Friction
The problem: Long forms with tiny input fields that require precision typing on mobile keyboards.
Why it happens: Checkout forms are designed for desktop keyboards, not mobile thumbs.
The fix: Enable autofill, offer Apple Pay/Google Pay, minimize required fields, and use appropriate mobile keyboard types.
5. Missing Sticky Add to Cart
The problem: Users scroll through your product page and when they're ready to buy, they have to scroll all the way back up.
Why it happens: Desktop layouts don't need this because the page fits on screen. Mobile pages are much longer.
The fix: Add a sticky Add to Cart bar that stays visible as users scroll. This alone can increase add-to-cart rates by 8-12%.
